Jonny Bruce is an exciting young gardener and nurseryman with a bright future ahead of him and a wealth of fabulous experiences already under his belt. In this evening lecture Jonny will be recounting his time spent at De Hessenhoff Nursery one of Europe’s leading specialist nurseries, with an extraordinary and diverse plant list akin to a Bible, fabulous plant quality and an impeccable ethos to grow all these plants organically and sustainably. An exciting opportunity to learn about this iconic nursery and inspire you all to go there!
Jonny was drawn to gardening whist studying History of Art and upon graduation immediately began his horticultural training at Aberglasney in Carmarthenshire under the expert eye of Joseph Atkins. After a year in Wales he was awarded the Christopher Lloyd Scholarship and spent two years working at Great Dixter with Fergus Garrett. These gardens fostered a love for the diversity of garden plants which led him to De Hessenhof in The Netherlands, the organic perennial nursery of Hans and Miranda Kramer, where Jonny has worked for several years. He has since returned to the UK where he works for several notable nurseries including Derry Watkins at Special Plants and Arvensis and is involved with preservation of Derek Jarman’s iconic garden at Prospect Cottage, Dungeness. He strongly believes in an organic future for horticulture and the need to support local nurseries in order to preserve the variety of plants we have come to enjoy.
