Drawn to Nature – Gilbert White and the Artists
by Simon Martin
Gilbert White is regarded by many as the first ‘Naturalist’ and his seminal work ‘The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne’ is one of the best loved books in the English language.
First published over 230 years ago, it has never been out of print, with over 400 editions being produced. Over the years, many of the editions have been beautifully illustrated often by celebrated Modern British Artists, John Piper, John Nash, Eric Ravilious and Clare Leighton among them.
In 2020 the Pallant House Gallery put on an exhibition looking at this artistic legacy and the influence that Gilbert White continues to have on modern day artists such as Mark Hearld, Angie Lewin and Emily Sutton. The exhibition was curated by Simon Martin and in this, his book he expands on this recent exhibition and is the first book to explore this artistic legacy.
With a gorgeous cover by Mark Hearld this book is a wonderful window not only into Gilbert White’s work but more importantly that of the artist’s that he has inspired. A true delight.
